Overview
This series is devoted to providing information to adult trained emergency medicine and critical care medicine providers who may encounter patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) on an infrequent basis. Information provided includes the epidemiology of ACHD, the natural history of disease progression, how patients with ACHD tend to present to the ED, the causes for hospitalization particularly ICU admission and outcomes along with factors which will impact these outcomes.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify the leading causes for emergency room presentation and inpatient hospitalization in patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD).
  2. Contrast the cardiac complications of ACHD patients to that of patients with structurally normal heart disease.
  3. Appraise the barriers to ACHD patients receiving appropriate follow up.
  4. Identify the major interventions many ACHD patients will require and the context in which these should be performed at centers of expertise.
  5. Recognize when patients are likely to have ACHD even when they are unable to relate the history.
  6. Distinguish the application of standard therapies and guidelines (e.g. GDMT for heart failure) to that of ACHD patients.

Texas Children’s Hospital is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Texas Children’s Hospital designates this Live Activity activity for a maximum of 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
