Overview
This series is devoted to providing information to adult trained emergency medicine and critical care medicine providers who may encounter patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) on an infrequent basis. Information provided includes the epidemiology of ACHD, the natural history of disease progression, how patients with ACHD tend to present to the ED, the causes for hospitalization particularly ICU admission and outcomes along with factors which will impact these outcomes.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify the causes for unplanned admission (generally through the emergency room) for adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD).est
  2. Identify and compare the common medical and surgical diagnoses which result in ICU vs acute care hospitalization in ACHD.
  3. Distinguish how ACHD medical and surgical illness differs from that of adults with structurally normal hearts.
