Overview
This comprehensive symposium will bring together leading experts in pediatric epilepsy surgery to explore the evolving landscape of minimally invasive techniques. With the growing adoption of surgical strategies such as SEEG, RNS, DBS, laser ablation, and gene therapy, this course is designed to equip pediatric neurologists and epileptologists, neurosurgeons, and emerging physicians with the latest clinical insights and translational advancements in the field. Through in-depth sessions, participants will examine the expanded indications for minimally invasive epilepsy surgery in children, including those with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), and infantile spasms (IS). Attendees will gain practical knowledge in surgical planning using SEEG, MEG, PET, rsfMRI, and other advanced imaging modalities, as well as the interpretation of invasive and non-invasive localization data. Discussions will cover emerging technologies such as robotics, RNS programming, DBS optimization, TMS applications, and intrathecal AED therapy. Experts will also address pre- and post-operative considerations including anesthesia, referral logistics, and complication management. Special emphasis will be placed on transforming discoveries into therapies, narrowing treatment gaps, and improving surgical outcomes for pediatric populations.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe current minimally invasive surgical approaches for the treatment of pediatric epilepsy, including laser ablation, SEEG-guided resections, and responsive neurostimulation.
  2. Compare indications, risks, and benefits of minimally invasive techniques versus traditional open epilepsy surgeries.
  3. Interpret advanced neuroimaging and electrophysiologic data to guide patient selection and surgical planning.
  4. Apply a multidisciplinary framework to assess candidacy and develop individualized treatment plans for children with drug-resistant epilepsy.
  5. Evaluate emerging technologies and procedural innovations in the field of minimally invasive epilepsy surgery.
  6. Identify opportunities to enhance postoperative outcomes and reduce complications through preoperative planning and intraoperative decision-making.

Accreditation

Texas Children’s Hospital is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Texas Children’s Hospital designates this Live Activity activity for a maximum of 17.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
