Overview
Sickle cell disease (SCD) affects millions of people worldwide including over 100,000 in the United States. Clinical manifestations of SCD include anemia, severe recurrent pain, strokes, and over time, damage to every organ in the body, resulting in premature death. Yet, despite its prevalence, devastating clinical effects, and significant impact on the healthcare system, healthcare inequities have delayed progress in improving and extending the quality of life for affected individuals. Over the last 10 years, innovative SCD research has gained ground, expanding how scientists conceive of the disease. After a gap of nearly 20 years, advancements in pharmaceutical development have led to the approval of new therapies. Curative therapies have also entered the discussion with the recent success of alternative donor transplants and approval of gene therapy. Efforts to promote hematology training hold promise to increase the number of skilled healthcare professionals treating these patients. This long-awaited progress requires careful planning and implementation across broad healthcare stakeholders to successfully reach and ultimately improve the experience of those living with SCD. The proposed symposium will build on the success of a statewide initiative and broaden the discussion to a national audience. This event will bring together key leaders across the field of SCD to discuss the implementation and impact of novel interventions, to define critical outcomes and metrics of successful care delivery to patients, and to develop policy initiatives to promote equitable access to healthcare for members of the entire sickle cell community. Objectives: • Evaluate available and forthcoming therapies for SCD with emphasis on access for the relevant populations within the sickle cell community who would most benefit. • Identify, measure, and track key outcomes and metrics reflective of optimal SCD care. • Develop and advance policy initiatives to address gaps in access to care and the equitable provision of resources for patients with SCD.

ACCME Objectives
  1. Evaluate available and forthcoming therapies for SCD with emphasis on access for the relevant populations within the sickle cell community who would most benefit.
  2. Identify, measure, and track key outcomes and metrics reflective of optimal SCD care.
  3. Develop and advance policy initiatives to address gaps in access to care and the equitable provision of resources for patients with SCD.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
  1. At the conclusion of this activity, 90% of respondents will identify at least one concept learned to enhance equitable and high-quality care for patients with Sickle Cell Disease.
